Save Shenstone’s Old Church Tower!
Historic England are considering whether or not they should allocate funding to renovate the grade 2 listed old church tower. It is a building of considerable historic interest and is currently classified as being ‘at risk’.
To be sure of getting support from Historic England it is vital that the community gets behind the restoration and contributes ideas/suggestions about how the restored tower can be used in the future. To this end there will be a Save the Tower Awareness Day on Saturday 16th March between 10.00am and 12.00 noon.
The tower is a very important feature of the new Shenstone Heritage Walk, written and developed by members of the Shenstone community Library Local History Group, which is due to be published shortly, and it makes sense to ask interested families to try out the walk and showcase the tower at the same time.
The short Heritage walk starts and finishes at the library and takes in the many interesting historic buildings along Main Street, New Road, Church Road and St John’s Hill. It is a little over a mile long and suitable for buggies. When walkers reach the church there will be refreshments and a range of activities for children, including
Church yard quiz (not at all gruesome)
An opportunity to climb up the bell tower of the ‘new’ church to see the recently restored bell frame
The church will also house an exhibition featuring the old tower as well as the plans for its restoration
There is no set start time for the walk, just turn up at the library or the church after 10.00am, collect a route and instructions and go around at your own pace.
Come along and help us preserve this special piece of local history!
